Daryl Runswick writes: The 'refrain' for Gentle do not care to know... came to me while I was noodling at the piano in 1983. I also had ideas for the 'episodes' around that time, but didn't compose them completely until the new year of 1997-8. This is just the kind of music my father loved (and wrote) and it stands in my oeuvre as his epitaph. The title (from A Summer Night by W.H.Auden) expresses foreboding in the shadow of the Second World War, during which my father went to prison as a conscientious objector.
