Daryl Runswick writes:
Here's the music for my daughter Alexandra Runswick and James
Graham's wedding on 9th July 2011. So far in my composing career
I’ve written music for three weddings: an organ piece for Alex's mum
Elaine's and my own wedding in 1969, a song for our son Tristan’s
wedding to Nichola in 2007 and now these four pieces for Alex and
James. This time I’ve ‘encrypted’ the couple’s names into the music.
We all know that musical notes have letter-names – C, D, E etc – so
you can make a tune which matches someone’s name. Of course not all
the letters of the alphabet exist as musical notes – only A, B, C,
D, E, F, G, H and S. So that gives us, from Alexandra, A, E and D.
From James, A, E and S. But some years ago I invented a complete
note-alphabet by giving each musical note two or three letters each.
Using this the L of Alex becomes the note F and the X becomes a D.
The J of James becomes a C-sharp and the M an F-sharp. So I can make
complete melodies (not to mention bass-lines) using both names, and
I’ve done just that. Alex and James’s names are intertwined in the
music. |
