There have been at least 80 commercial recordings of The
King's Singers doing my music. You can buy many
of them on CD or as downloads, for which reason I
am not allowed to
put them on this website. The
13 I can put up are here.
For the rest you must
go to the usual outlets.
Below is a complete list of my works (arrangements
and compositions) for the group. For some King's Singers
stories, go
here.
I think I first met Simon Carrington, Al Hume and Brian
Kay in 1966, though I don't clearly remember. That would
have been
at Cambridge, where the famous photo for the
Carols from Kings
LP was taken with them all in surplices, plus that
other colleague of mine from later years, Peter Hall (the singer Peter
Hall). Some years later (mid 70s, I'd guess) Simon sort-of-half invited me
to join The King's Singers, but I don't think he meant it and I
wouldn't have joined
anyway. Why would I? My association with them
has been as close as anybody's over
the years, and longer than most,
I'd say. I first played bass on their recordings in 1970,
two years
after their debut; the next year they received my first arrangement,
Ob La Di, Ob La Da;
by 1974 my compositions (starting with Wish You Were Here) were
appearing on their albums; the
following year I was conducting them and their backing orchestra; from the
80s I was producing their
records and writing the sleeve notes; I am the only person to have
provided music for their 10th,
20th, 21st and 40th anniversary concerts, and to have appeared onstage
with them at all but the 10th;
and the total number of pieces I've either arranged or composed for them
is one
hundred and six.
